Pop Culture Roundup Feb. 12, 2007

Superhero Times has lots of pics of upcoming DC Direct figures, including a nifty lineup of Captain Marvel characters, incuding Cap, Mary, Jr., Sivana, Hoppy and more. Dang. More money I need to save...

Complete list of DC Direct action figures.

Booksteve pays tribute to the great comics artist Bob Oksner. I probably first encountered Oksner's work on DC's Shazam title of the 1970s, where he drew a fab Mary Marvel.

Bubblegumfink fibbed about his blogging "retirement" again. I'd be annoyed if I wasn't so happy he's back. But, that's it: I'm not reporting on such "I'm quitting" announcements again, by anyone. Even if BoingBoing goes belly up, you won't read about it here. People change their minds too much.

Beatles downloads are on the way soon, Apple Corps head Neil Aspinall says, but it may be a while before we see a remastered "Let it Be" film.

“All 13 core albums, the ones originally released on CD in 1987, have been remastered," Aspinall says. "At some point they will all be released, probably at the same time.”

But the film “Let It Be” remains in DVD purgatory, Aspinall says. The reason? “The film was so controversial when it first came out. When we got halfway through restoring it, we looked at the outtakes and realized: This stuff is still controversial. It raised a lot of old issues.”

Let's hope the remasters will include both stereo and mono mixes on CD. The mono versions of Sgt. Pepper and "The White Album," especially, sound much different than their stereo counterparts and are well worth hearing if you never have. And, since the Beatles paid more attention to mono that stereo all those years ago, those are the mixes they most intended us all to hear.

Best Beatles Sites.

Here's a great new site dedicated to all things pertaining to Sheena of the Jungle.

Have some rare works by comics artist Jack Kirby? Writer/comics historian Mark Evanier would like to hear from you so he can consider including it in the upcoming Kirby book he's working on.
