Coming Up: New York Graffiti: 1619-1750 Broadway - An Independent American Pop Story 1958-1968

Out Nov. 29. Order from Amazon now.

Details:
Some Americans reference the music of their parents from the late 1950s to mid-1960s as the American Graffiti generation. The term coined by George Lucas in his movie homage to that period and the youth coming of age during that time. And so RPM uses that reference as it's setting to focus on the records produced by a group of music companies operating in the 'tin pan alley' of New York from the Brill Building at 1619 Broadway and up around the block.
A fascinating story emerges surrounding the growth of a group of independent US Publishing Companies, some 28 in number, the oldest of which Broadway Music was founded in 1914, and how by the end of 1968 all had come under the ownership of one, the Edward Kassner Music Company.
New York Graffiti is set in the time when the song publishers launched their own in house record labels. Not only that, these companies were part of the business as a vertical integration of publishers, writers, arrangers, producers, labels, studios, artists, management, DJs, radio. Most in the same district of New York, often in the same building.
With control of 'the Song' then it was about manipulating as much as possible around it's exploitation for maximum commercial exposure. With our group of publishers they specifically launched and ran the labels Joy Records, Seville Records, President Records, Duel, Gulf, Shell Records, Select, and the recordings on this collection are drawn from them.
An 80 page perfect bound book (let) reveals this story in detail, including photos and images never before published, history of the songs, along with biogs of every artist in the box. These include the singer / songwriters Neil Diamond's early single as Neil & Jack, and Tom Pacheco in his first band The Raggamuffins, artists Shirley Ellis pre-'Clapping Song' as Shirley Elliston, soon to be backing Elvis and Dusty in American Studios 'Memphis Boy' Bobby Wood, pre-Three Degrees producer Richard Barrett, 'Montego Bay' Bobby Bloom during his time with The Imaginations.
And many examples of where the Song is King such as Prisoner of Love, a 1946 Perry Como record, here as a glorious swing beat number by Billy Duke months before James Brown's soul defining version. Ricky Shaw's stab at Rick Nelson with A Fool's Memory subsequently covered by Billy Fury, Bobby Sherman's RnB classic Do You Want To Dance here given the then-on-trend 'twist' treatment by Joey &The Twisters just before Cliff Richard's upbeat pop version, Earl Wade's bossa version of Feel So Bad which was soon followed by Elvis's hit single version, and more obscurely Laura Lynn's beautifully swooning It Took A Long Time Coming then covered by Robert Plant as an early solo single. Not to mention the label's own hits including 'Bobby's Girl', 'Shout Shout (Knock Yourself Out)', 'Little Band Of Gold', 'Heartbreaker', 'Hootenanny', 'Pushin' Your Luck'.
Over half the set is on CD for the first time with three tracks previously unreleased, two more freshly mixed down from multi track tapes. Many very collectable, such as the garage sound of The Barbarians, the early Neil Diamond as Neil & Jack, Northern and early Soul classics including those from Pat Hervey, Roger Pace, Linda Cumbo, Pat Jarvis, Sonny Stiles, The Kampells, Millie Foster, Curtis Knight. This gorgeous box set comprises over 100 tracks and 250 minutes of music. New York Graffiti - a romp through a decade of American Pop history, 1958-1968, following a specific set of Publishers and their record labels who mirrored all the key Pop music movements of that period: Doo Wop, Rock n Roll, RnB, early Soul, Girl Group, Folk, Beat, Garage.

Coming Up: Jimi Hendrix - Songs For Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts

Out Nov. 22. Order now from Amazon.

Details:
Songs For Groovy Children assembles all four historic debut concerts by Jimi Hendrix's newly assembled Band of Gypsys at New York's Fillmore East on New Years Eve 1969 and New Years Day 1970.

Presented in their original performance sequence and encompassing 43 tracks across 5 CDs or 8LPs, the set boasts over two dozen tracks that have either never before been released commercially or have been newly remixed plus the full extended versions of songs originally released on the 1970 Band of Gypsys album.

Measured alongside his triumphs at Monterey Pop and Woodstock, Hendrix's legendary Fillmore East concerts illustrated a critical turning point in a radiant career filled with indefinite possibilities.

Earlier in 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Experience had closed a musical chapter and the guitarist assembled a new trio dubbed Band of Gypsys, consisting of Hendrix, his longtime friend Billy Cox, on bass, whom he had befriended when both were serving with the 101st Airborne Division Cox and Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles, who would also contribute occasional lead vocals.

Hendrix was inspired by his collaboration with Cox and Miles and this creative renewal drove the development of promising new material such as "Power Of Soul," "Burning Desire" and the extraordinary "Machine Gun."

By the end of January 1970, the band was history, but the blend of funk, rock and soul pioneered by the trio had a profound impact. Notable devotees include funk pioneers Parliament-Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, the Isley Brothers and Bootsy Collins, extending all the way forward to hip-hop.

Newly mixed and restored in sequence without edits, fans can finally hear Hendrix, Cox and Miles blast through their genre-defying sets that included freshly written songs like "Earth Blues" and "Stepping Stone," as well as supercharged Experience favorites inclusive of "Foxey Lady," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "Wild Thing," "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze." Additionally, exciting new versions of Howard Tate's "Stop," "Steal Away," by Jimmy Hughes and a searing "Bleeding Heart" by Elmore James highlighted the command that the trio had over blues & R&B music.

The lavish package is filled with unseen photos from talent such as Fillmore East house photographer Amalie Rothschild, Jan Blom (whose iconic, color saturated images provided the original artwork for 1970's Band of Gypsys) as well as Marshall Amplifier representative Marc Franklin, who had full access to the group in their dressing room backstage.

The booklet features remembrances from bassist Billy Cox and liner notes by author/journalist/filmmaker Nelson George. Songs For Groovy Children was produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott - the trio that has overseen every project for Experience Hendrix since 1995. The box set was mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Bernie Grundman.

Out Oct. 25. Order from Amazon now.

Details:
Best known for his hit productions for The Association (Cherish, long Comes Mary) and for being one of the chief architects of 'sunshine pop,' Curt Boettcher was a founder of the visionary rock bands The Millennium,The Ballroom, and Sagittarius. Looking For The Sun is the first release to focus on Boettcher as a producer and arranger rather than a performer, highlighting cuts that were released as singles, most of which have remained out of print since their initial release.
Collected here are 21 tracks (18 on LP), all sourced from the original master tapes, which Boettcher either wrote, produced, arranged, or sang on. Artists include: Cindy Malone, Sandy Salisbury, Gordon Alexander, Keith Colley, Summer's Children, Jonathan Moore, Ray Whitley, Eddie Hodges, The Bootiques, Action Unlimited, and Sagittarius featuring contributions by Glen Campbell, David Gates, and Gary Usher.

Coming Up: Bob Dylan - Travelin' Thru, 1967 - 1969: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 15

Out Nov. 1. Order now from Amazon.

Details:
1967 saw a profound transformation in Bob Dylan’s musical evolution. Withdrawing from public view following his July 1966 motorcyle accident, he re-emerged in 1967 with John Wesley Harding, recorded in Nashville with a core trio featuring bassist Charlie McCoy and drummer Kenneth Buttrey, the resulting album had a sublime, minimal sound. Follow-up Nashville Skyline, also recorded in Nashville, featured the stirring “Girl From The North Country,” a duet with Johnny Cash. The album would reach number 1 in the U.S. and the U.K.

Now, Travelin’ Thru, 1967-1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 revisits Dylan’s pivotal journey to Nashville. This 3CD or 3LP set features outtakes from both albums, including the first release of Dylan and Cash’s joint studio sessions. Coming Up: Gene Clark "No Other: Deluxe Edition"

Finally, a reissue of this long-out-of-print classic by the former Byrds lead vocalist. Looks like it's done right, too.

Out Nov. 8. Order from Amazon now.

Details:
Gene Clark’s 1974 masterpiece gets the reappraisal it’s long overdue. On the eve of what would have been American singer-songwriter and Byrds founding member Gene Clark’s 75th birthday comes the reissue of one of his finest works, No Other.
Released in 1974 on Asylum Records, a year after the Byrds' short- lived reunion, Gene reached for the stars with No Other; a psychedelic rock, folk, country and soul record that famously cost a small fortune to make.
Although received warmly by critics, it flopped and was soon deleted, a failure Gene never came to terms with.
However, as The New York Times wrote around the record’s 40th anniversary in 2014, “hindsight has burnished No Other, as it has redeemed other albums that went on to be reconstructed as rock repertory, like Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers and Lou Reed’s Berlin,” with the album now being increasingly recognized as one of the greatest of its time, if not all time.
45 years on and recently remastered at Abbey Road, 4AD are giving No Other the reappraisal it deserves. The original eight track album is being released on both CD and LP, while a limited run double CD edition in a hardbound book cover is also coming which includes a bonus disc of alternate studio versions of each track plus a recording of “Train Leaves Here This Morning” (an Eagles hit in 1972, written by Gene and Eagles founding member Bernie Leadon).
Excitingly, the deluxe box set edition fans have been waiting decades for has also been lovingly curated. An extremely limited item, the box contains the LP, three SACDs (the original album in an authentic Japanese vinyl replica sleeve plus two more discs of session mixes), an exclusive 7”, a comprehensive Blu-Ray disc which includes HD versions of all tracks, a stunning 5.1 surround mix of the album, the original 1974 vinyl master and an exclusive documentary by Paul Kendall (the director responsible for the acclaimed 2013 film, The Byrd Who Flew Alone: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark), and a hardbound 80 page book which features essays, extensive liner notes and previously unseen photos.
“One of the greatest albums ever made. Initially celebrated for its obscurity, No Other is now celebrated for its magnificence. It was in every way a magnum opus: epic, sprawling, poetic, choral, rococo.” -The Guardian UK

Coming Up: James Brown "Live At Home With His Bad Self"

Out Oct. 25. Order from Amazon now.

Details:
October 1, 1969, in Augusta, GA, was a homecoming for James Brown. His and his band's smoking performance at the city's Bell Auditorium was captured on tape, with an intention to make an album of the show the cornerstone of a move back to his roots. Live at Home With His Bad Self was scheduled as a lucrative holiday release.
But JB and that band broke up. Soul Brother No. 1 called in a new, young band, featuring Bootsy Collins, and within a few weeks they recorded the funk anthem 'Sex Machine.'
With the single flying up the charts and no album to promote along with it, JB scrapped the planned Live at Home album. He instead doubled down on a Sex Machine album, a part-live 2LP set that included a portion of the Augusta show.
Now, finally, as James Brown intended: the full show with his celebrated '60s band. Live at Home With His Bad Self arrives on its 50th anniversary newly mixed with seven unreleased performances that even include two actual live instrumentals, 'Lowdown Popcorn' and 'Spinning Wheel,' that were on the original LP in studio recordings with fake applause. The package includes an essay by former James Brown tour manager and publicist Alan Leeds, a Grammy-winner who is also the co-producer of the album.
