Written by Hitori Nakano
Art by Wataru Watanabe

Perpetual geek, social basket case and obsessive fan – needless to say, the guy called “Train Man” has never had a girlfriend. Most of his days are spent immersed in electronics and waiting for the box set DVD of his favorite anime series.
But fate takes a turn for Train one ordinary night on an ordinary train ride. He falls in love at first sight with Hermess, a gorgeous fellow passenger. When a drunken rider tries to harass her, Train surprises himself by coming to her rescue. But when Hermess later contacts Train with a thank you give and the possibility of further contact, that’s one situation he can’t handle.
He immediately goes online to a popular chat room to solicit advice. To his horror, he’s encouraged
to ask her out. Soon he is bombarded with advice regarding how, when and where he should do it. Will Train Man find true love, or will all this pressure to come out of his shell be too much for him to take?
Based on a supposedly true story, the tale of DENSHA OTOKO (The Train Man) was a phenomenon in Japan.

AMERICAN SPLENDOR #1
Written by Harvey Pekar
Art by Dean Haspiel, Ty Templeton, Hilary Barta, Greg Budgett and Gary Dumm
Cover by Glenn Fabry
Following the success of his critically praised, top-selling graphic novel THE QUITTER, Harvey Pekar returns to Vertigo with an all-new 4-issue AMERICAN SPLENDOR miniseries, celebrating 30 years of the series that first showed how, as Harvey says, “ordinary life can be pretty complex stuff.” First appearing in 1976, AMERICAN SPLENDOR rose “from the streets of Cleveland” to change the way comics readers and creators viewed the potential of their medium. The series won an American Book Award and became an Oscar-nominated film.
In Vertigo’s AMERICAN SPLENDOR, Harvey is joined by an all-star roster of artists from both indie and mainstream comics. The first issue features QUITTER artist Dean Haspiel illustrating “The Day’s Highlights,” while Ty Templeton (BIGG TIME, BATMAN ADVENTURES) portrays Harvey’s account of his relationship with his parents after the events of THE QUITTER. Also in this issue, AMERICAN SPLENDOR veterans Greg Budgett and Gary Dumm depict Harvey’s struggles with an acerbic flight attendant and Hilary Barta (TOMORROW STORIES) shows us what Harvey considers a “delicacy.”
Now, three decades after his self-published debut, Harvey Pekar proves that while his life has changed, his ability to find the exceptional in the everyday has only grown better with time.

Paul McCartney's kids and grandkids cut a special version of "When I'm 64" in honor of his birthday yesterday.

'It was such a lovely gesture that Paul couldn't help but be touched,' said a source yesterday. 'He is still pretty low but the terrible singing on the record by his family was enough to have Paul in hysterics.

'It was just what he needed.' The words were written by Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer Sir George Martin.

Sir Paul's four children, Stella McCartney and her son Miller, Mary and her sons Arthur and Elliot, James and step-daughter Heather, made the track in Studio Two - where the Beatles recorded most of their music.

Pop Culture Roundup June 15, 2006

There's a new Beatles beatleg podcast up.

--------------------------

Timelord seeks new companion: Billie Piper is leaving "Doctor Who."

--------------------------

According to Outpost Gallifrey, the new "Doctor Who" achieved respectable ratings during its U.S. run:

...the new updated Doctor Who boosted SCI FI Channel's ratings on Friday nights by double digits, the network reported. The new version of Doctor Who, produced by the BBC, wrapped its first season on SCI FI on June 9. Doctor Who averaged a 1.3 household rating and 1.5 million total viewers in its 9 p.m. Friday timeslot, a 44 percent increase in ratings and a 54 percent increase in viewership over the same timeslot in the second quarter last year. In key demographics, Doctor Who averaged 778,000 viewers aged 18-49, a 57 percent increase over 2005, and 942,000 viewers aged 25-54, a 56 percent increase.

While Sci Fi hasn't officially announced plans to air the show's second season, that seems likely. ICV2 is reporting the second season will air on the network starting this October.

Pop Culture Roundup June 14, 2006

Dirk Deppey is leaving his editing gig at the Comics Journal and reviving his much-missed Journalista comics blog.

Sharity: Stars of "Hogan's Heroes" sing songs of World War II.

------------------------

Sharity: Datajunkie posts some great Virgil Finlay sci-fi pulp art along with some episodes of a South African sci-fi radio series.

------------------------

The New York Times reviews a recent Radiohead concert:

Sound has supplanted technique for the musicians in the band; or to be more precise, the manipulation of sound has effectively become a technique in itself. On more than one tune, Mr. Greenwood and Mr. O’Brien laid aside their guitars to squat at analog consoles, precisely shaping noise. In similar fashion, Mr. Selway blended his drumming with various electronic beats, erasing the distinctions between them.

But it was Mr. Yorke’s voice that inevitably carried the music, and one striking thing about the concert was how often he let it loose without guttural strangulation. That’s one reason why “Nude,” a new ballad, was gorgeous; during one soaring falsetto note, the band faded out, and the effect was angelic.

Billboard has a report about the suviving Beach Boys getting together recently to receive some platinum record rewards. It's the first time at-odds members Brian Wilson and Mike Love has shared the same oxygen in a while. But the real news:

Capitol Records also announced plans for a 40th-anniversary release on June 27 of a deluxe CD single of "Good Vibrations," featuring five versions of the band's seminal 1966 hit and its original U.S. B-side.

In late August, Capitol also plans a 40-year commemorative reissue of the band's landmark "Pet Sounds" album in a CD/DVD package that includes mono, stereo and digital Surround Sound mixes of the music, plus previously unreleased promotional and documentary footage.

-----------------------

To quote Homer Simpson: "I've never been a praying man. But if you're up there Superman...":

As the hype machine shifts into high gear for the upcoming release of "Superman Returns," some are reading deeply into the film whose hero returns from a deathlike absence to play savior to the world.

"It is so on the nose that anyone who has not caught on that Superman is a Christ figure, you think, 'Who else could it be referring to?' " said Steve Skelton, who wrote a book examining parallels between Superman and Christ.

David Lynch ringtones are now available:

Thanks to the latest ring tone technology, beginning today, a new pocket-sized experience is now available from film director David Lynch. Originating from his past works, website, and unique persona overall, the director's latest offering comes in the form of a variety of categories of downloadable content, including: Voicetones, Strangetones, Musictones, and Wallpapers for mobile phones. The first release of content includes tone selections from "Dumbland," his first animation series, sound effects from ERASERHEAD, a sample of original music by David, and even some of his favorite sayings. Wallpapers include graphics from the Dumbland series, the ERASERHEAD poster, and select images from his website WWW.DAVIDLYNCH.COM.

"Cell phones are a hand held theatre," said David Lynch. "I like to experiment with sound and music ringtones and this is an opportunity to create something different. Since Dumbland came out people expressed liking certain sounds and sentences from Dumbland -- they get a kick out of that. The technology is now there so it's like an experiment to see what we can put through the phone when it rings."

Review: "Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles" by Geoff Emerick

You may have a mental image of them shaking their moptops on "The Ed Sullivan Show" or getting screamed at in Shea Stadium, but the Beatles gave their best performances not on stage but behind the closed doors of Abbey Road Studios.

Generally, the audience at those session would include only a few intimates--roadies, producer George Martin and a recording engineer or two. And from the Beatles' first session to their last, that engineer (or assistant engineer, early in his career) was nearly always Geoff Emerick.

George Martin often gets thought of as the Beatles' chief collaborator. And it's true, he provided orchestrations, led them through rehearsals of intricate harmonies, let them experiment and made loads of good suggestions. But Emerick's vital role is somewhat overlooked. He's the guy who, after the Beatles or Martin told him what sort of sound they were after, had to get it down on tape.

When John Lennon explained he wanted to sound like the Dalai Llama chanting on a mountaintop on "Tomorrow Never Knows," Emerick's the one who strained his brain before landing on the idea of running Lennon's vocal through a revolving Lesley speaker to give it that wild faraway-getting-closer effect.

He's the one who edited two, differently-keyed versions of "Strawberry Fields" together. And he's the guy the surviving Beatles called in when they regrouped in the late 1990s to record the technically tricky "Free as a Bird," comprised of the "Threetles" adding fresh instrumental tracks to a Lennon vocal off a crappy sounding cassette.

And that's not mentioning some of Emerick's other contributions, which include engineering Paul McCartney's "Band on the Run," producing Elvis Costello's "Imperial Ballroom" and various projects by Squeeze, Split Enz and more.

So, you get the idea...This isn't the memoir of some simple hanger-on but a person who was there as a participant, with some unique insights to share.

And that's what Emerick does thoughout in this entertaining book co-written with veteran music journalist Howard Massey.

Emerick modestly lays out his contributions to the Beatles' sound. He's clear that he was an employee not an artist. He merely was doing his best to help the band and Martin reach the sounds they were after. But he doesn't shortchange himself, either, outlining in detail his own creative contributions.

He doesn't dish dirt, but shares his honest impressions about working with the band. He's an unabashed McCartney guy: Paul is the one he felt was most musical and the Beatle who was friendliest to him. John, as you might imagine, was tougher to work for, with moods that could range from charming to indifferent to downright nasty. George wasn't so much the quiet one as the unfriendly one who took forever getting his guitar solos right. Ringo, somewhat surprisingly, is depicted as standoffish, quiet and not much fun.

Over the pages we get a sense of how the Beatles worked creating their music and the role Emerick, the techie at the controls, played in getting it all on tape. It's one of the most enjoyable Beatles-related memoirs I've read.

Doctor Who "The Web Planet" and "inferno"

Both of these sets are due out Sept. 5. Click links to pre-order.

"The Web Planet" Starring William Hartnell, 1965.
A strange power drain forces the TARDIS to materialise on the planet Vortis. There, the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki become involved in the plans of the butterfly-like Menoptra to reclaim their planet from the parasitic Animus that is slowly enveloping it with its web-like domain, the Carsenome.

Joining forces with an advance party of Menoptra and the underground-dwelling Optra, the travellers manage to destroy the Animus, freeing the ant-like Zarbi and death-spitting larvae guns from its control and releasing the TARDIS from its influence.

"Inferno" Starring Jon Pertwee, 1970.
The Doctor is an observer and UNIT are providing security cover at an experimental drilling project designed to penetrate the Earth's crust and release a previously-untapped source of energy, named Stahlman's Gas after its discoverer. Professor Stahlman dismisses the concerns of the project's Executive Director Sir Keith Gold and exceeds all safety margins in order to expedite the work.

Soon however the drill head starts to leak an oily green liquid that transforms those who touch it into vicious primeval creatures with a craving for heat. The Doctor is accidentally transported by the partially-repaired TARDIS control console into a parallel universe where England is ruled by a military dictatorship.

The drilling project is at a more advanced stage here and, thwarted by his friends' ruthless alter egos, he is unable to prevent the penetration of the Earth's crust, which ultimately causes the planet's destruction. Escaping back to his own universe, where the drilling is still in progress, the Doctor tries to warn of impending disaster. At first he is disbelieved, but his words are borne out when the power-crazed Stahlman is himself transformed into one of the hideous primordial creatures.

The Doctor, aided by consultant Greg Sutton, kills Stahlman with ice-cold blasts from fire extinguishers. He is finally able to shut down the drilling with only moments to spare.

Brace yourself for some exhilarating experiences and deadly confrontations across time and space. The human race will survive - but only with the Doctor's help.

Doctor Who: The Stealers Of Dreams
In the far future, the Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack find a world on which fiction has been outlawed. A world where it's a crime to tell stories, a crime to lie, a crime to hope, and a crime to dream. But now somebody is challenging the status quo. A pirate TV station urges people to fight back, and the Doctor wants to help - until he sees how easily dreams can turn into nightmares. With one of his companions stalked by shadows and the other committed to an asylum, the Doctor is forced to admit that fiction can be dangerous after all. Though perhaps it is not as deadly as the truth...

Doctor Who: The Resurrection Casket
Starfall - a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. The pioneers who used to be drawn by the hope of making a fortune from the mines can find easier picking elsewhere. But they still come - for the romance of it, or old-fashioned organic mining. Or in the hope of finding the lost treasure of Hamlek Glint - scourge of the spaceways, privateer, adventurer and bandit. Will the TARDIS ever work again? Is Glint's lost treasure waiting to be found? And does the fabled Resurrection Casket - the key to eternal life - really exist? With the help of new friends, and to the horror of new enemies, The Doctor and Rose aim to find out...

Doctor Who: The Price Of Paradise

The Doctor and Rose arrive to find that the once-perfect eco-system is showing signs of failing. The paradise planet has become a death trap as terrifying creatures from ancient legends appear and stalk the land... Is there a connection between the human explorers who have crash-landed and the savage monsters? What secret lies at the heart of the natives' ancient ceremonies? And what price might one human have to pay to save the only home he has ever known? When a planet itself becomes sick, can there be a cure? The Doctor and Rose find themsleves in a race against time to find out...

What are the monsters that prowl the woods after sunset? What is the light that glows in the disused lighthouse on Black Island? As the children's nightmares get worse, the Doctor and Rose discover an alien plot to resurrect an ancient evil...

Doctor Who: The Art Of Destruction
The TARDIS lands in 22nd century Africa in the shadow of a dormant volcano. Agri-teams are growing new foodstuffs in the baking soil to help feed the world's starving millions - but the Doctor and Rose have detected an alien signal somewhere close by. When a nightmare force starts surging along the dark volcanic tunnels, the Doctor realizes an ancient trap has been sprung. But who was it meant for? And what is the secret of the eerie statues that stand at the heart of the volcano?
