by TODD DEZAGO & ERIC NOLEN-WEATHINGTON

The latest volume of the Modern Masters series looks at the life and
work of one of today’s top comic-book artists, Mike Wieringo. Like the
title character of his first major job, The Flash, Wieringo hit the
comic book industry running. Armed with a fresh, unique style all his
own—merging elements of manga with the power of the Marvel comics of
his
youth—he quickly became a fan-favorite. His work featuring Robin and
Superman, Spider-Man and the X-Men—not to mention the creator-owned
world of Tellos—has cemented him as one of the top artists in the
business. And his recent run on Fantastic Four ranks among the best in
the title’s long and prestigious history. Now Todd Dezago and Eric
Nolen-Weathington give you an inside look at the artist’s life and
career! This 120-page volume presents his most comprehensive,
career-spanning interview to date, and is jam-packed with tons of rare
and unpublished artwork, including an 8-page full color gallery. It’s
the ultimate look at the work of a true Modern Master: Mike Wieringo!

DC Direct presents Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman statue

From a press release:

DC Direct, the toy and collectibles brand of DC Comics, announced the release of a limited edition Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman statue, created in tandem with Carter, who portrayed the 5’10” goddess from 1975 to 1979, first on the hour-long television series “THE NEW ORIGINAL WONDER WOMAN” and later “THE NEW ADVENTURES OF WONDER WOMAN.”

The statue, modeled after and personally approved by Carter, was sculpted by the incomparable Tim Bruckner, and is hand-painted and made of cold-cast porcelain. Standing at 13.5 inches, the statue features a costume inspired by the 70s television series. Though DC Direct has made numerous Wonder Woman items, including action figures, statues and props, this is the first time that any have been based on Carter’s likeness or her television series.

“DC Direct is thrilled to be working with Lynda to bring this statue to the fans,” said Georg Brewer, VP – Design & DC Direct. “Lynda's time as Wonder Woman is indelibly imprinted in all our minds. This is the ultimate Wonder Woman statue for all fans, including those at DC Direct."

The statue was made available for viewing at Wizard World Chicago on Aug. 3-6, at the DC Comics booth. The Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman statue will be available in stores on April 4, 2007.

Dark Horse, DC DIrect team up for new figures line

Dark Horse Comics and DC Direct have teamed for a new line of figures based on DC Comics characters. First up: a vintage-looking depiction of the golden age Superman.

Details:

In an exciting collaboration, Dark Horse Comics and DC Direct, DC Comics' action figure and collectible company, are teaming to create a new series of vintage-style statuettes featuring four of DC Comics' best-known characters. Modeled after products that were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, the four new statuettes being produced by Dark Horse are designed and manufactured consistent with earlier "syroco"-style figures. This new line is scheduled for monthly release starting in February 2007. The first of the statuettes will feature a classic rendition of Superman.

The sculpting and packaging design is inspired by the art style of original Superman artist Joe Shuster, and echoes the look and feel of his earliest comic appearances. Produced in a limited edition of hand-numbered copies, the figure is fully painted and ready to display. Batman will be the second release, followed by Wonder Woman and The Flash. For each, the style, costumes and other details will be consistent with the original "Golden Age" look of the character from the comics of that period.

"This project is a dream come true for me," Dark Horse Comics President Mike Richardson exclaimed, "and I want to thank my friend Paul Levitz of DC Comics for making it possible. Dark Horse and DC have collaborated on many publishing projects, but this is the first merchandise crossover we have ever done. It is gratifying that DC Direct has acknowledged our unique product category, especially since they have done such a fabulous job with these characters on their own."

"Dark Horse has established a unique creative approach with this line of statuettes that I along with their many collectors have enjoyed," said Georg Brewer, Vice President -- Design & DC Direct Creative. "Our creative collaboration makes perfect sense given the historical roots of this style and significance our characters from that time."

The DC Comics series will depict the characters as they were originally presented in the comics, but also will deliberately be somewhat more rough-hewn than is common, with features including non-slick surface textures, visible seam lines, and other slightly "distressed" aspects.

The new series maintains the packaging style and special features of the previous Dark Horse series, but affords collectors the opportunity to start with the first release. Each hand-numbered statuette comes carefully packaged in a custom-tooled, full-color, litho-printed tin box. Also included is a small booklet about each character and a vintage-style pinback button of the character.

"We have worked hard to create a superior package for these very special items," Dark Horse Product Development head David Scroggy remarked, "and we think we have met the challenge with help from our manufacturing team and of course the creative and licensing team at DC Direct."

The first releases are Superman (February 2007), Batman (March 2007), Wonder Woman (April 2007), and The Flash (May 2007). The initial release is arguably the most beloved character ever created for comic books, Superman. Since his debut in 1938, the orphan from the planet Krypton has claimed a status of one of the best-known fictional characters of all time. The Man of Steel's heroic adventures are a part of our cultural tapestry, and the intent of this project is to recall his earliest days.

Pop Culture Roundup Aug. 9, 2006

The Seattle Post Intelligencer profiles local comics publisher Fantagraphics. The piece talks about Fantagraphic's popular line of "The Peanuts" and "Dennis the Menace" reprint books and adds this cool tidbit:

Also on their lineup of comics retrospectives: The complete "Pogo" by Walt Kelly and the complete works of Bill Mauldin, whose depictions of the average WWII GI won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1945.

----------------------

Jog the Blog shares this prescient observation by comics writer Grant Morrison in a 1987 interview:

On the grim'n'gritty approach to super-heroes exemplified by Alan Moore's "The Watchmen" and Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns":

I think it's been done by two very good writers, but I think in lesser hands it's going to become really tedious.

A while back, the excellent Alter Ego mag detailed the story of a lost Superman comics strip by the character's co-creator Jerry Siegel, which introduced the notion of kryptonite and showed Clark Kent revealing to Lois Lane that he was Superman. For real. No foolin'. No "imaginary story." Now the excellent "Superman Through the Ages" site is adapting the script with new, 40-style art. Any true Superfan will wanna check it out. Here's more info about the history of the script, and here's the beginning of the new adaptation. More Superman.

TV Land celebrates the 40th anniversary of "Star Trek" Sept. 8.

...on Friday, September 8, 2006 -- the very date on which the series first premiered in 1966 ... TV Land will showcase four of the most talked about and best remembered episodes from the series, including the show's premiere and the historic episode featuring TV's first interracial kiss. More Star Trek.

DVD: "Sesame Street Nostalgia Box Set" compiles material from series' early seasons

I'd love to know more about this. Just from the title, it sounds like a lot of fun.

What we know: The "Sesame Street Nostalgia Box Set" includes material from the show's first five seasons on three disks. So, I'd imagine we can anticipate lots of pre-Elmo goodness, such as Ernie singing "Rubber Duckie" along with early appearances by Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster and the rest, plus original crew Bob, Susan, Gordon and the much-missed Mr. Hooper.

Let's hope they throw in the Jim Henson-sung version of the mega-catcha "Mahna, Mahna" too.

Out Oct. 24 and available for pre-order now.

DVD: "Inner Sanctum" films from 40s collected

Starring Lon Chaney Jr., the films include:

Calling Dr. Death (1943)
Weird Woman (1944)
Dead Man's Eyes (1944)
The Frozen Ghost (1945)
Strange Confession (1945)
Pillow of Death (1945)

DVD: "Hollywood's Legends of Horror Collection" rounds up 1930s spooksters

Paul Lavond was a respected banker in Paris when he was framed for robbery and murder by crooked associates and sent to Devil's Island. Years later, he escapes with a friend, a scientist who was working on a method to reduce humans to a height of mere inches (all for the good of humanity, of course). Lavond however is consumed with hatred for the men who betrayed him, and takes the scientist's methods back to Paris to exact painful revenge.

Details on Lost season 3

An official press release from ABC:

"Lost" - awarded the 2005 Emmy and 2006 Golden Globe for best drama series - has begun production in Hawaii on third season episodes of action-packed mystery and adventure -- that will continue to bring out the very best and the very worst in the people who are lost. The series will have its season premiere WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

After Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, its survivors were forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive. But they discovered that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, a strange French woman and another group of island residents known as "The Others." The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue and bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative, a group of scientific researchers.

Jack, Kate and Sawyer open the season in captivity as prisoners of "The Others." Just who these "Others" are and what they want are primary questions Season Three will explore. Michael Emerson joins the regular cast in his ongoing role as Henry Gale, leader of "The Others." Romance looms on the horizon as Jack's interests veer towards a mysterious new woman, whose motives may be questionable. Sun and Jin will continue to celebrate their pregnancy - but is the child really Jin's? Locke and Sayid will band together with some of the other survivors and journey across the island in an attempt to free Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Charlie will attempt to return into the good graces of Claire and her baby, Aaron, but can he be trusted to stay clean and sober? The fates of Locke, Desmond and Mr. Eko in the aftermath of the implosion of the hatch are answered. Will Penny Widmore find the island and her long, lost love, Desmond, and can the survivors find a way to interact with the outside world?

The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must continue to work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain if they want to stay alive. But as they have discovered during their 60-plus days on the island, danger and mystery loom behind every corner, and those they thought could be trusted may turn against them. Even heroes have secrets.
