Review: "Justice Society Vol. 1"

The Justice Society of America, in DC Comics' "JSA" title, is enjoying a very long and successful run. But it wasn't always that way.

Before "JSA" there had been numerous attempts to bring back the JSA, which debuted in the Golden Age of the 1940s and then vanished in the early 1950s when superheroes fell out of favor. The "Justice League of America" (the JLA was itself and updated version of the JSA) reintroduced the Golden Age characters in annual crossovers starting in 1963. But, outside of those appearances, the team never really caught on with readers in their own adventures.

This new trade paperback collects the first 10 issues of a failed 1976 attempt to revive the JSA, plus a 1977 issue of "DC Special" featuring the team.

The scripts for these stories, by Gerry Conway and Paul Levitz, are pretty much by-the-numbers superteam stuff, not much different from anything you'd find in Justice League stories from the same period. A crisis brings the heroes together, they split up to tackle individual aspects of the problem, then they come together to put the big kibosh on things. Gardner Fox should've put a patent on it.

And, because this was the mid 70s and because this was DC, none of the characters really has much of an individual personality. Not that Conway or Levitz had much to work with. Back in the 1940s, when the JSA was introduced, superheroes didn't have personalities, not other than being heroic and super and occasionally quippy. Superheroes with varying moods and personal crises were introduced by Marvel Comics in the early 60s.

Levitz and Conway do the best they can, giving the Golden Age Green Lantern a financial crisis to cope with and turning Power Girl (first introduced in this series) into sort of a "Maude"-style feminist. With a huge in her costume to display her cleavage. None of it is really enough to make the stories compelling in the same way as, for example, an issue of the "Fantastic Four" or "Avengers" from the same time might've been.

What makes the reprint worthwhile, however, is the art. Much of the work is by a young Keith Giffen and the wonderful Joe Staton (these days working on "Scooby Doo" comics, but a great superhero artist with a real flair for character and action scenes). But the big draw (no pun intended. Really!) is Wally Wood, featured in seven of the issues, sometimes on his own, others assisted by Giffen. Those issues are beautiful to look at, with nice examples of Wood's sci-fi machinary backgrounds and figure work. If it's just to see Wood drawing Superman (not Superduperman, like he did for "Mad" back in the 1950s) the book is worth picking up. And, no doubt, some folks will pick it up because it's Wood drawing Powergirl, who seems to become more buxom with every issue he turned in.

The reproduction of said art is great. The color reconstruction by Drew R. Moore is nice and bright and loyal to the originals.

The only thing that's a problem is that, for some lamebrained reason, all the credits from each issue's splash page has digitally disappeared. So, while we get lump artist, writer, inker credits (letterers don't count, I guess) at the front of the book, we can't easily determine who wrote and drew each individual issue. Since the stories, I'd guess, are being republished mainly out of historical interest, this maneuver was just plain dumb. Plus, it's an offense to the original creators. I'm morbidly curious about what sort of inexcusable reason the editors would give for doing this. Oh well.

The back cover of the collection says this is the first of two "JSA" collections, so I guess we'll see the remaining five issues of the run and perhaps some other 70s JSA appearance in a second book soon.

Today's Best Song Ever: "(Love is Like A) Heatwave" -- Martha and the Vandellas

Sure, the Supremes had more hits. But Martha had more soul. Listen to Martha Reeves' earthy performance here, and that of backup singers Rosalind Ashford and Annette Sterling.

The trio started at Motown singing behind others. That's them on Marvin Gaye's "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" and "Hitch Hike."

"Heatwave," penned by the unbeatable team of Holland-Dozier-Holland was released in summer 1963 and hit #4 on the U.S. pop charts.

The single is the sound of Motown hitting it's stride. Launching with tight snare followed with handclaps, horns and Martha's sun-coming-out-from-behind-the-clouds vocals. It's a great tune, amazingly catchy and well-constructed. But it's the performance here that makes the record. Same with Martha's "Dancing in the Streets." Ever here decent cover versions of either? Ever heard the Who's horrid covers of both?

There's a new Beatles Beatleg Podcast up.

-------------------

Via Blog@Newsarama: Yet another tale of problems that arise when the comics industry forgets that superheroes were initially created as entertainment for children. That's the way things were for probably 40 years. But now days, the vast majority superhero books aim for a more "mature" audience.

It's a silly, probably irreversible, state of affairs created because creators have taken mainstream characters first created as entertainment for children and made them "adult."

It used to be any superhero comic on the spinner rack was fair game for any kids around the age of 10. In my opinion, that's the way things should've stayed. If creators wanted to project mature themes (mature themes for the main part being throwing in some cuss words, more vivid violence and more overt sexuality) they should've done so by creating their own, new superheroes rather than taking heroes for children into areas they don't belong.

I mean, if you expect to get adult entertainment out of stories featuring Spider-Man, Batman, Superman and the like, there's something a little wrong with you.

There are plenty of comics out there really meant and created for adults. Try those out instead.

Today's Best Song Ever: "(White Man) in Hammersmith Palais" -- The Clash

The Clash is surely one of the best, and most important, bands of the rock'n'roll era. And this tune is the one that demonstrated they were up to something special.

The band could play stripped down, aggressive punk with the best of 'em. But here--after a rocking opening--they slip into a credible reggae groove and get thoughtful without becoming boring or pretentious.

In the tune, singer/writer Joe Strummer recounts his experiences at a reggae show in venue named in the tune's title. It was an awakening, as he explained in 1991:

"All over the world people are oppressed and in London there were the dreads and there were the punks, and we had an alliance. England is a very repressive country... Immigrants were treated badly... So these people had a sense of pride and dignity, and when we went into their concerts, where we should have had the grace to have left them alone... And they didn't jump us, they didn't stomp us, they didn't beat the seven shades of you-know-what out of us... They understood that maybe we needed a drop of this roots culture. And 'White Man in Hammersmith Palais' is a song that was going through my mind while I was standing in the middle of the Hammersmith Palais...in a sea of thousands of rastas and dreads and natty rebels. That song was trying to say something realistic."

The lyrics address Strummer's concern with cultural friction, with prejudice and the oppressiveness of white culture.

The Clash continued to include reggae rhythms in their music everafter without it ever seeming they were coopting someone else's culture. They paid respect to it, showed love for it, found common ground with it.

Today's Best Song Ever: "Young Man Blues" -- The Who

This hard-rocking cover of the much more sedate original by pianist Mose Allison was a live staple for the Who all through the late 1960s and 70s. The best version is on the must-have Live at Leeds album.

They just thunder through it: John Entwhistle's thundering bass, Keith Moon's all-over-the-place drums and Pete Townshend coming on like two or three guitarists, sounding at times riffy and distorted and others jazzy and clean. Vocalist Roger Daltrey sounds like he's ready to kick some old people ass before he gets old himself. Putting this on made me feel good after many a crappy summer job.

Today's Best Song Ever: "(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree" - The Move

This is a pleasant bit of baroque-psych whimsy from the Birmingham group that ultimately gave birth to the Electric Light Orchestra. It first appeared in September 1967 as the B-side to the Move's also-excellent "Flowers in the Rain" and--in a different version--as the A-side of the Idle Race's first single. It was the Move's version, however, that caught on with the listening public.

(Trivial aside: Idle Race singer Jeff Lynne, of course, would later join Wood in the Move and the two of them ultimately formed ELO. It's a confusing family tree/discography. Anyway...)

Wood's lyrics, telling of a nextdoor girl who is "round the bend," are cheerfully absurd, somewhat in the style of the Who's "Happy Jack." Spotting her, in her "silver-clad bikini/Singing, dancing round her fruit tree," our narrator wonders: "Could i calm her down by throwing stones at her/If only I could make the right approach to her/Think i'd rather tame a tiger/Turn those lemons into cider/Still I'd like to get beside her."

Not a lick of sense to it. Not that we mind, what with the exquisite harmonies on the choruses and mini string symphony on the middle eight. It's an amazing little arrangement, reminding us how much imagination and effort went into pop music of this era. And for a B-side at that!

Today's Best Song Ever: "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" - Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans

What do you get when you combine Walt Disney and Phil Spector? A thoroughly unlikeable fellow, I'd imagine. A megalomaniacal,gun-toting lunatic who lives in a fantasy land? No wait. That's just Phil Spector.

But musically, the combination is sublime. Slowed way down, the tune is given a cool groove you wouldn't imagine possible. Layers and layers of sound, of course, over which the trio of Darlene Love, Bob B. Soxx (Robert Sheen) and Fanita James put down the infectious vocals of a tune first featured in Disney's 1946 film, "Song of the South."

The Soxx single hit #1 on the U.S. charts in December 1962 and was followed up in 1963 with "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Hearts?" and "Not Too Young to Get Married".

Upcoming Doc Savage and Shadow reprints

Nostalgia Ventures Inc. continues its official reprinting of the Doc Savage and Shadow pulp novels with these releases:

DOC SAVAGE DOUBLE NOVEL VOLUME 1
“Fortress of Solitude” and “The Devil Genghis”
The Man of Bronze returns as the pulps' greatest superman confronts The Devil Genghis, John Sunlight, a mad genius armed with incredible scientific inventions stolen from Doc Savage’s Fortress of Solitude. Doc Savage and his Iron Crew return in two thrilling novels by Lester Dent writing as Kenneth Robeson. This double-novel volume reprints both appearances of Doc Savage's greatest enemy, the diabolical John Sunlight.

This 7"x10" trade paperback marks the return of Lester Dent's original Doc Savage novels after a 15-year hiatus. Doc Savage Magazine was one of the most popular of the hero pulps, published from 1933 through 1949 by Street & Smith as the sister publication to The Shadow Magazine. The Doc Savage pulp novels were reprinted by Bantam between 1964 and 1991, and created a publishing sensation as the first numbered series of paperback adventure novels.

Doc Savage #1 features the original pulp cover paintings by Emery Clarke from the October and December 1938 issues of Doc Savage, along with the original interior illustrations by Paul Orban. Doc Savage #1 also comes in a variant cover edition featuring art by James Bama. Both cover versions will reprint both of the original pulp covers in smaller size on the back cover. Nostalgia Ventures, softcover, 7x10. B&W, $12.95

Fans may notice strong similarities between a certain blockbuster summer film and the plot of Lester Dent's 1938 novel, "Fortress of Solitude." Clark Savage Jr., the Man of Bronze, was a major influence on the creation and development of Clark Kent, the Man of Steel, including of course his arctic "Fortress of Solitude." This double-novel volume reprints both appearances of Doc Savage's greatest enemy, the diabolical John Sunlight. "If Street & Smith had not published The Shadow and Doc Savage, there might never have been any Superman or Batman," observes popular-culture historian Will Murray, who collaborated with Lester Dent on seven posthumous Doc Savage novels and provides historical commentary in these new volumes. "Between them, Walter Gibson and Lester Dent created the archetype of the superhero, and most of the fiction formulas and trappings of the eternal battle between superhero and supervillain that has come to dominate popular culture in the last 75 years. I like to call Lester Dent 'the Father of the Superhero' because, while Superman and Batman had other influences, both borrowed liberally from Doc Savage, the original owner of the Fortress of Solitude."

THE SHADOW DOUBLE NOVEL VOLUME 2
“The Chinese Disks” and “Malmordo”

The greatest avenger from the legendary hero pulps returns in two more classic novels by his creator, Walter B. Gibson.

The Shadow's crime-fighting organization became fully-formed in “The Chinese Disks,” the novel which introduces his agents cabby Moe Shrevnitz, reformed former-crooks Hawkeye and Tapper, Pietro and the giant African Jericho Druke. The novel is a sequel to Gibson's first novel, “The Living Shadow,” and features the return of The Shadow's first major foe, Diamond Bert Farwell. Thus, “The Chinese Disks” is not only one of the most significant Shadow mysteries, but also one of the most satisfying,” observes pulp historian Will Murray in his historical commentary to the story.
“Malmordo” is the final Shadow novel completed by Walter Gibson before his 1946 departure following a contract dispute, and ended his initial 15-year run chronicling The Shadow's adventures. Murray observes, “In a very real sense, the series that had finally come together in The Chinese Disks culminated with Malmordo, one of Gibson¹s top tales of the 1940s, and one which features the slimiest villain 'Maxwell Grant' ever created.”
THE SHADOW Volume Two features the original pulp cover by George Rozen and interior illustrations by Tom Lovell, who went on to become one of the 20th century's greatest illustrative painters.
Nostalgia Ventures, softcover, 7x10. B&W, $12.95

THE SHADOW DOUBLE NOVEL VOLUME 3
“The Red Blot” and “The Voodoo Master”

The Knight of Darkness returns in two more classic pulp thrillers including “The Voodoo Master,” voted the favorite novel in a 1937 Shadow Magazine readers’ poll and again acclaimed as one of the top Shadow novels by pulp fans nearly a half century later. Walter Gibson’s 1936 novel introduces The Shadow’s arch-foe Dr. Rodil Mocquino, the master of black magic who returned in two subsequent novels and several Golden Age comic book stories.

In “The Red Blot” (1933), Lamont Cranston first meets Commissioner Weston (setting up the friendship that would be featured in the famous radio series) and investigates a series of crimes orchestrated by a malevolent mastermind who leaves a bloody mark as his calling card. The trade paperback also features the original pulp covers by George Rozen, all the interior illustrations by Tom Lovell and historical commentary by Will Murray, principal author of "The Duende History of The Shadow Magazine." Nostalgia Ventures, softcover, 7x10. B&W, $12.95

DOC SAVAGE DOUBLE NOVEL VOLUME 2
“The King Maker” and “Resurrection Day”
Doc Savage returns in two more great pulp adventures by Lester Dent writing as Kenneth Robeson.

In “Resurrection Day” (first published in 1936), the Man of Bronze perfects a method for resurrecting a dead human being but only one person can be revived. Who will Doc choose?

In “Repel (1937), a strange new element is expelled in a South Pacific volcanic eruption, but falls into the hands of Cadwiller Olden, Doc Savage’s most formidable foe.

The trade paperback also includes a foreword by Peter David (Star Trek, The Incredible Hulk), the original pulp covers by Robert Harris, interior illustrations by Paul Orban and historical articles by Will Murray who collaborated posthumously with Lester Dent on seven new Doc Savage novels published by Bantam.
Nostalgia Ventures, softcover, 7x10. B&W, $12.95
