On sale Mar. 21
Novel, 256 pages
$14.95
TPB, 4" x 6"
A hilarious account of life's daily disappointments and victories, as told by blogger Patrick Hughes. From reminiscing about being a teen in the '70s to chronicling another family Christmas with Jello shots, Hughes has the right amount of candor, wit, and perversity for these vignettes to really pack a punch.
Diary of Indignities first came to public notice on the popular blog Bad News Hughes
(http://badnewshughes.blogspot.com), where thousands of readers are flabbergasted, disgusted, and amused every day by Hughes's whimsical stories of soul-melting shame. The indignities generated by the author's uncanny life and talent for personal failure include more than your average share of embarrassment, heartbreak, carefree violence, booze, bodily injury, hypochondria, inappropriate nudity, painful rashes, neuroses, colonoscopy procedures, and unpleasant smells, and are all totally true. Well, except for the bits that are really obviously just kind of made up. Most people can tell the difference.

On sale Feb. 28

$14.95
TPB, 7 1/4" x 5 1/8"
In 1950, writers Arnold Drake and Leslie Waller, both attending college on the G.I. Bill, envisioned a sophisticated, novel-length comic tailored to their peers. Collaborating with comics art master Matt Baker, known for singularly defining the genre of "good girl art" on titles such as Phantom Lady, they crafted a film-noir inspired masterwork of romance, intrigue, and moral relativity. When cynical newspaperman Hal Weber reunites with old flame Rust Masson, he finds the beguiling widow of a mining magnate willing to do anything to undermine the local political machine-her only opponent for total control of Copper City!
This painstakingly restored replica volume includes a new introduction by writer Arnold Drake providing a first-hand history of the graphic novel. Before winning the Bill Finger Award for lifetime achievement in comics writing, before creating Deadman, or writing Doom Patrol and X-Men, Drake helped bring the original "picture novel" to life, a true milestone in the history of comics!

A movie spin-off of the old Jim Henson "Fraggle Rocks" TV show is in the works. From the press release:

The untitled film will for the first time take Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red on an adventure outside of Fraggle Rock where they will interact with the strange beings in "outer space" (also known as humans). The treatment is being written by author Ahmet Zappa (The Monstrous Memoirs of a Mighty McFearless) who will also executive produce the project with Brian Henson and Jason Lust. Lisa Henson will produce.

Lisa Henson said, "'Fraggle Rock' has remained a favorite project at our Company and has certainly continued to be loved by its many devoted fans, so we are thrilled to begin work on this project. With its message of celebrating diversity and its ambitious goal of promoting world peace, now is the perfect time to embark on a new Fraggle adventure."
"I'm very excited to be working with The Jim Henson Company on this project," said Ahmet Zappa. "So much of my childhood was spent watching 'Fraggle Rock' ... I never missed an episode! I'm also really looking forward to using music to tell the story; it played such a central role in the original series and truly helped create the 'Fraggle Rock' that we know and love today."

Ahmet Zappa, incidentally, is the son of late musician Frank Zappa.

Ain't it Cool reviews the "Doctor Who" spin-off show "Torchwood."

The basic premise of the show is that there is a secret organisation, Torchwood, who work outside the Government protecting against alien threats and scavenging any technology left behind. They are led by Captain Jack from Series 1/27 of Doctor Who, whom we last saw being resurrected by a superpowered Rose and abandoned in the 50th century.

The episode we saw last night was the first one and it did all the jobs a pilot should do - introduced the set-up and the characters and added enough mystery to make you want to keep watching.

Yoko Ono is suing the EMI label saying she's been shorted royalties on John Lennon's record sales.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, accuses EMI and Capitol Records Inc. of violating a half-dozen agreements by "willfully and knowingly underreporting royalties" by hiding the "true use and disposition of Lennon's recordings."

Ono's three-page filing, which included a summons and notice but no detailed complaint, also accuses EMI and Capitol of "intentionally and systematically rendering dishonest and grossly deficient accounting statements."

"Lost" clues: "Further Instructions" Ep. 3, Season 3

Synopsis:

We catch up with Locke, Desmond and Eko after the Hatch implosion. Locke and Desmond are battered but ok. Eko is missing.

Back on the beach, Locke quickly builds a sweat lodge where he retreats in order to meditate and determine what to do next. He has a series of visions, in which he talks with the deceased Boone and determines Eko has been taken by a surviving polar bear. With Charlie, Locke rescues a half-dead Eko from the bear's lair.

Also, Hurley returns to the beach camp and updates everyone on what's happened to Jack, Kate and Sawyer.

In flashbacks, we see Locke living on a farm/commune that supports itself by growing marijuana. The settlement is infiltrated by an undercover cop picked up hitchhiking by Locke. Locke has finally found happiness in the commune and wants to do anything he can to protect the situation. He lures the cop alone into the woods, planning to kill him, but he can't force himself to commit murder. We see the cop leave, not knowing how the situation resolves.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* There are bones and remnants of a Dharma uniform in the bear's lair. Along with a Tonka dump truck!

* Eddie, the undercover cop, is wearing a Geronimo Jackson t-shirt, which is remarked on by Mike, the leader of Locke's farm/commune. Eddie said the shirt belonged to his dad. Last season, a Geronimo Jackson LP is discovered in the Hatch.

* The Hatch implosion blew off all of Desmond's clothing.

* Desmond remarks to Hurley about Locke's speech about going to rescue Jack, Sawyer and Kate. The thing is, Locke hadn't yet made this speech. Hurley is duly freaked out.

* Is Desmond psychic? Does Locke project his thoughts somehow (last season, he and Eko exchanged dreams)? In this episode, Eko seems to awake from unconsciousness to give Locke guidance, but we're not sure if Locke imagines this or if it really happened. Are the three implosion survivors somehow sharing a mind link or something?

* In Locke's vision, he sees all the other key plane crash survivors. Charlie and Claire are shown and Boone tells Locke "they'll be ok... for a while." Is this a clue to future problems for the couple?

* Speaking of Charlie, could he be any more self-centered and annoying? His lack of concern for what became of Locke, Eko and Desmond is startling. By episode's end, though, a glimmer of his old self seemed to be coming through.

* Does Locke's vision give us a view of the future, with people getting on planes to go home after getting off the island? Or does it refer to before the crash?

* In the vision, Sawyer is holding what appears to be a tourist pamphlet for San Francisco, with the Golden Gate Bridge on it. Last season, there was an upside-down pic of the bridge on the wall of the Australian psychic's place.

* Desmond is shown in the vision as a pilot, followed by flight attendants. In a way, it appears he's responsible for the "trip" everyone is on--his inaction resulted in the plane crashing and his girlfriend is somehow tied in with Dharma and everything that's going on with the island. Boone says Desmond is "looking after himself."

* And Benjamin Linus is depicted as an airline security guard.

* Looking at the remnants of the Hatch (basically now just a big hole in the ground), how in the world did anyone survive the implosion?

* The tip of Eko's walking stick features a verse from John 3.05: "Lift up your eyes and look north."

* An error or clue: Locke has different birthdates on his driver's license and gun registration when he's pulled over by the Sheriff's deputy.

* Charlie tells Locke: "You can't tell me what I can't do." Variations on this sentiment crop up often on the show. Locke, Jack and others have said it.

* Is the drawing on this promo shot for the episode a joke, or an outtake?

* The episode includes a jokey reference to the film "Altered States" when Charlie cautions Locke about changing into a monkey when entering the sweat lodge. Another possible in-joke, Charlie remarking about tree being good conversationalists. Is this a reference to Dom's previous role in the "Lord of the Rings" films?

Members of Monty Python reunited for the London premiere of "Spamalot."

"Veronica Mars" producer Diane Ruggiero is developing a superhero/comedy series for the CW.

--------------------

Indy cartoonist Daniel Clowes ("Art School Confidential," "Ghost World") is recovering from open heart surgery performed earlier this week.

--------------------

The mainstream press finally cottons to the fact that pop artist Roy Lichtenstein was a plagiarist, swiping his "comics panel" paintings wholesale from real comics panels by the likes of Irv Novick, Russ Heath and other folks who toiled throughout their careers as work-for-hire freelancers with no benefits or royalties.

Comic book companies owned the original copyrights. DC Comics declined to comment for this article. Russ Heath, a DC artist whose work Lichtenstein used, says the publisher was never interested in suing Lichtenstein, probably because there wasn't much money to be made. ``He never even had me over for a cocktail, and then he died. So I guess I'm out of luck."

Ninety-year-old artist George Tuska couldn't come to the phone, but his wife, Dorothy, says they had no idea that a 1961 Buck Rogers panel drawn by her husband became ``Emeralds," a valuable Lichtenstein canvas. ``Oh my God," she says. ``That is unbelievable." Sotheby's sold ``Emeralds" to an anonymous buyer for $1.6 million in 1999.

One artist whose work Lichtenstein appropriated, Joe Kubert , says he doesn't care. ``My focus is on what is happening today." As it happens, the Lichtenstein Foundation uses an exact copy of a Kubert picture of a fierce dog, titled ``Grrrrrrrrrrr!!" to illustrate a warning to copyright violators on its website. Grrrrr indeed.

The Beatles' Love album out Nov. 21

Here are details from the official press release:

APPLE CORPS LTD/CAPITOL RECORDS TO RELEASE THE BEATLES "LOVE" ALBUM IN STEREO AND 5.1 ON NOVEMBER 21, 2006

Apple Corps Ltd/Capitol Records are to release the Beatles LOVE album in stereo and 5.1 November 21st. This will be the first Beatles album available in 5.1

The stereo CD will contain 78 minutes of music. The DVD surround sound version on DVD disc album will be a slightly extended version with 81 minutes of music.

After being asked by the remaining Beatles, Ringo and Paul, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, to make experimental mixes from their master tapes for a collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, Sir George Martin, The Beatles legendary producer, and his son Giles Martin have been working with the entire archive of Beatles recordings to create LOVE. The result is an unprecedented approach to the music. Using the master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, Sir George and Giles have created a unique soundscape. The release of this album, which is also featured in the Cirque du Soleil/Apple Corps collaborative production of the same name at The Mirage in Las Vegas, has been much anticipated.

"This album puts the Beatles back together again, because suddenly there's John and George with me and Ringo," said Paul McCartney. "It's kind of magical."

"George and Giles did such a great job combining these tracks. It's really powerful for me and I even heard things I'd forgotten we'd recorded." commented Ringo Starr.

"The album has the feeling of love and that's why the title is Beatles LOVE," added Yoko Ono Lennon, "They have let everything that is beautiful and daring come out." "The music is stunning. I think the most amazing thing about it is that you can pull it apart and find that all the elements carry with it the essence of the entire song," said Olivia Harrison.

Andrew Slater, President & CEO, Capitol Records said, "The Beatles and George Martin invented everything we love about modern recorded rock music. It is only fitting that they now shake things up and create the new blueprint for rediscovering and falling in love again with the soundtracks to our lives."

The 5.1 disc is a DVD-Audio/DVD-Video hybrid. The audio is presented in high-resolution 96/24 5.1 surround on the DVD-Audio part of the disc. The DVD-Video part carries 5.1 surround in DTS and Dolby Digital as well as a PCM stereo mix. This DVD album is designed to be played on DVD video equipment but will carry no video component.
