SCALPED #1
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by R.M. Guéra
Cover by Jock
Introducing SCALPED, an all-new monthly series by up-and-coming writer Jason Aaron (THE OTHER SIDE) featuring the gritty art of R.M. Guéra (Heavy Metal).
Fifteen years ago, Dashiell “Dash” Bad Horse ran away from a life of abject poverty and utter hopelessness on the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation in hopes of finding something better. Now, he's come back home to find nothing much has changed on “The Rez” — short of a glimmering new casino, and a once-proud people overcome by drugs and organized crime. So is he back to set things right or just get a piece of the action?
Also at the center of the storm is Tribal Leader Lincoln Red Crow, a former “Red Power” activist turned burgeoning crime boss who figures that after 100 years of the Lakota being robbed and murdered by the white man, it’s now time to return the favor.
Now Dash — armed with nothing but a set of nunchucks, a hellbent-for-leather attitude and (at least) one dark secret — must survive a world of gambling, gunfights, G-men, Dawg Soldierz, massacres, meth labs, trashy sex, fry bread, Indian pride, Thunder Beings, the rugged beauty of the Badlands…and even a brutal scalping or two.
For a dose of Sopranos-style organized crime drama mixed with current Native American culture, look no further than SCALPED!

The BBC stands to make big money off "Doctor Who" toys.

The BBC's commercial arm will take an undisclosed royalty from the more than 500,000 themed toys and more than one million action figures sold over the next 10 weeks.

As a result, the corporation is expected to collect more than £5 million from the merchandise.

IDW Publishing is launching a new line of "Star Trek" comics, beginning in January with a six-issue mini-series focusing on the Picard years.

"Star Trek - The Next Generation: The Space Between," begins by setting
the scene during the first year of the Enterprise-D' s mandated mission
to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations,
boldly going "where no one has gone before."

At the helm of this first venture is writer David Tischman (Bite Club),
who is joined by artist Casey Maloney (Children of the Grave). Artists
Dennis Calero (X-Factor) and Zach Howard (Shaun of the Dead) will
provide 50/50 covers for the first issue.

But that's just the beginning. IDW Publishing will be producing
additional Star Trek titles with a new line of comic book projects in
the rich tradition of 40 years of science fiction excellence.

More Star Trek.

"Lost" clues: "The Glass Ballerina" Ep. 2 Season 3

Synopsis:

The Others put Sawyer and Kate to back-breaking work busting up rocks at a building site and Ben continues trying to break Jack's will power. Meanwhile, a band of Others manage to steal the sailboat from Sayid, Jin and Sun.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* "Henry Gale" tells Jack that his real name is Benjamin Linus and that's he's been living on the island all his life.

* "Linus" is the name given to all three sons of Apollo, according to this poster. Last season, Apollo candy bars are discovered in the Hatch. And the giant statue seen by Sayid, Sun and Jin last season looks sorta Greek...

* On the other hand, Ben Linus sounds a bit like "been lying to us," notes this poster.

* Is Ben the son of Dharma Initiative funder/founder Alvar Hanso?

* Ben promises to return Jack to the outside world if Jack agrees to do "one thing" for him.

* Ben tells Jack the Others are in contact with the outside world. To demonstrate, he brings out a TV set and shows a video of the 2004 World's Series.

* Ben is shown spying on Kate and Sawyer via a closed-circuit TV. Many TV screens are shown so he likely can spy on lots of other people this way as well.

* When Ben and Juliet learn Sayid and the rest have a sailboat, Juliet says "What's the worry, so they'll sail around in circles." This reinforces the idea that it's tough to navigate away from the island. Is this due to electromagnetic anomalies or something else? Ben, on the other hand, really wants the boat. Bad. We're not sure why.

* While at the work site, Alex (daughter of the French woman Danielle and one of the Others') secretly makes contact with Kate. She asks Kate about Karl, who was being kept in the same cages as Sawyer and Kate. Presumably, Karl is the Other we saw trying to escape the cages in episode one.

* What are the Others' building at the construction site?

* Are the other, um, Others working at the site prisoners too?

* It seems clear the Others are doing their best to break down Sawyer, Kate and Jack any way they can. Do they hope to brainwash them?

* In flashbacks, Sun's father orders Jin kill Jae,the man Sun slept with. However, Jin isn't told that Sun was unfaithful. Jin beats Jae but stops shorts of killing him. Jae later jumps (or was he pushed?) from a hotel window and dies. Is Jae the father of Jin's baby?

* Jae was in room 1516 of the hotel.

* Did Colleen, the Other who Sun shot, die?

* Colleen and Juliet seems quite unfriendly to one another. Why?

..."It's a complete reconceptualization of the title," Eick told Daily Variety. "We're using the title as a starting point, and that's all."

"Inland Empire," David Lynch's first film in five years has a three-hour running time.

"Empire" begins with two interwoven stories of an actress, played by Laura Dern, who is making an onscreen comeback in a Southern melodrama she's filming called "High in Blue Tomorrows." But the film soon branches off to follow a third abused and abusive character also played by Dern.

"I figure I have at least three roles, maybe a few more," she laughed in an interview.

MODERN MASTERS VOLUME TEN: KEVIN MAGUIRE
by George Khoury and Eric Nolen-Weathington

In 1987, a year after Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns turned comics
grim and gritty, artist Kevin Maguire proved that comics could still be
fun, with the release of the “all-new” Justice League. His style was
the
perfect match for the humorous dialogue and character-driven stories,
and the unlikely series quickly developed a large following. But the
glue that held the series together was Maguire’s ability to convey
emotion on the page. He has an uncanny knack for capturing just the
right facial expression and body language in his figures. The Justice
League, Captain America, the X-Men, the Defenders... they are all
actors
on Maguire’s stage, and he directs them with the ability of a true
Modern Master. This new volume in the Modern Masters series, by George
Khoury and Eric Nolen-Weathington, features a career-spanning Kevin
Maguire interview and tons of artwork, including a large gallery
section
featuring many rare and unpublished sketches and finished pieces. This
128-page volume presents the ultimate look at the work of a true Modern
Master: Kevin Maguire!

The 128 page (plus cover), squarebound , 8 1/2" x 11" trade paperback
with a full color cover and black-and-white interiors retails for
$14.95
in the U.S. and ships 13 December 2006.

Lost Clues: "A Tale of Two Cities" Ep. 1, Season 3

Synopsis:

The opening scene takes place in what looks to be a typical suburban neighborhood. A book group is meeting. There's a loud noise in the sky and rumbling. Rushing out of doors the book group members see Oceanic Flight 815 crashing.

Turns out this "neighborhood" is the Others' island settlement. And this scene is a flashback.

We jump to the present and catch up with Jack, Sawyer and Kate, who are being held separately by the Others.

Observations/questions/speculation:

* "Henry Gale," who the Others call "Ben" is quite obviously the leader of the group. He orders Ethan and Goodman to rush to the separate crash sites and pretend they're surviving passengers of the plane.

* Ben tells Ethan and Goodman he wants "lists" of the passengers. Such lists are mentioned in season 2 and apparently detail "good" passengers for the Others to abduct. But what makes a passenger good? And what is the Others' definition of the word?

* The Others' reaction indicates they didn't expect a plane to crash at that moment and weren't responsible for the crash. However, Henry's quick reaction and specific orders to Ethan and Goodman indicate the Others have dealt with previous crashes or had a plan in place in the event a crash occurred.

* It appears Jack, Sawyer and Kate are being tested. Or being broken down. Is this all a prelude to brainwashing by the Others?

* Why is Juliet sad at the beginning of the show? Are she and Ben an item? Or were they?

* Juliet tells Jack the Dharma Initiative is in the past. What matters is now.

* How/where did Juliet get the court and other documents detailing Jack's past?

* Who is the man Sarah left Jack for? Why is she so reluctant to reveal his identity? Is he somehow associated with the Dharma Initiative and/or the Others?

* What's up with Jack hearing his dad's voice on the loudspeaker in the area he's being kept captive? Hallucination? Brainwashing technique?

Additional notes:

* Featured music: "Downtown" by Petula Clark (interestingly, Julia takes the CD out of a Talking Heads "Speaking in Tongues" CD case). "Moonlight Serenade" by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, playing in the background sits despondently in his care during a flashback scene. The tune is also on the air when Sayid and Hurley fix the radio in season 2's "The Long Con."

* The book group was reading Stephen King's "Carrie." One of the member's criticized Juliet for this choice of book, saying Ben wouldn't approve of it. Later, when Ben sees Juliet holding a copy of the novel, he says "So I guess I'm out of the book club." In season 2, given a book while held captive in the Hatch Ben/Henry says, sarcastically, "What no Stephen King?"

* The Other "Mr. Friendly" indicates that bears (polar bears) were kept in the cage Sawyer now resides in.

* Numbers shown on Jack's pager during a flashback scene: 7:15:23.
