Lost Clues: "Not In Portland" Ep. 7, Season 3

Synopsis:

We learn, sort of, how Juliet came to be with the Others. In flashbacks, we learn she is some sort of a fertility researcher/doc secretly using some experimental treatment to help her sister--who seems to have cancer--become pregnant. Her unfriendly ex-husband learns what she's up to and is interested in capitalizing on her discovery. However, a mysterious company called Mittelos Bioscience is also trying to recruit Juliet to work for them in their lab "outside of Portland." The Other Ethan Rom, is working with Mittelos. It appears Mittelos has Juliet's ex killed--hit by a bus so it looks like an accident--so Juliet is free to join them.

Meanwhile, in the present time, Jack finishes the surgery on Ben after much bargaining with the Others to ensure Sawyer and Kate are allowed to go free. Alex, one of the Others helps them, as does Juliet after Ben tells her she'll be able to go back home if he survives. Carl, Alex's boyfriend, is sent back to the larger island with Sawyer and Kate, but Juliet forces Alex to stay behind.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* We're led to believe Ben is Alex's father.

* Carl is being brainwashed by the Others. Who all is/isn't brainwashed among their ranks?

* Again, there's a cult-like aspect to the Others and the Dharma Initiative. The brainwashing films Carl is shown contain spiritual phrases and imagery.

* We also see Dharma doc DeGroot in the brainwashing film. Some viewers also spotted Alvar Hanso in the film.

* Mittelos is an anagram for "Lost Time." It's also an anagram for "time slot," and the show has a new one.

* Carl's guard is reading Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time."

* So, any chance Ben will Jack go as promised?

* Carl is being kept in cell #23.

* Were there any other people being held complex in the same building as Carl? Is this where they bring new recruits/abductees for brainwashing?

* Did Rachel, Juliet's sister survive? And did her child?

* In the Bible, Rachel is the mother of Benjamin. The Biblical Rachel died while giving birth to Benjamin. Also, Rachel and Benjamin are members of Jacob's family (the name Jacob appears in the brainwashing video).

* The Mittelos logo is similar to the Dharma logo.

* What's up with the Others and kids? It appears Juliet was brought to the island because of her fertiliy findings. The Others abducted children from the downed flight, including Walt. And they were interested in Claire's baby.

* There's an Oceanic symbol on the plane shown flying by Rachel's room window.

* Some viewers believe there's an Apollo candy bar ad on the bus that offed Juliet's ex.

* It sounds like the name of the Mittelos recruiter is Richard Alpert. The real Alpert was an LSD researcher and crony of Timothy Leary's. He's now known as the New Age spiritual leader Baba Ram Dass. More.

Evanier announces Jack Kirby book(s)

Mark Evanier, writer, comics historian and former assistant to comics artist Jack "King" Kirby, says his work on a planned Kirby biography has yielded so much material he plans to do two books.

The first--set for publication this October--is a celebration of Kirby's art, while the second, the actual autobiography is still in the works.

Here's Mark on the details:

"Kirby: King of Comics"...will be released in October of this year by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., which is one of the world's most prestigious publishers of high quality art and illustrated books. It'll be a hardcover volume, 9" by 12-1/2", all in color and with a gatefold and all sorts of nifty features that we hope will make it worthy of its subject.

[It] will be a very nicely printed art book with a simpler but quite complete version of the Kirby biography. The volume will also be loaded with rare Kirby art, all of it in reproduced in full color, much of it shot from the original artwork. That needs a bit of explanation. Many of the pieces will consist of black-and-white artwork in pencil or ink but we'll be printing them in color so that you can see all the pencil marks, corrections, smudges and in some cases, notes in the margins. There will also be plenty of pages that print Jack's art in pencil form and, of course, color pieces and some things you've seen before but not in the way we're going to present them.

Later on — and don't ask me when but it'll be another year or two at least — I'll publish the gargantuan, Galactus-sized bio for the hardcore Kirby fan...the kind of person who wants to read every little detail of the man's extraordinary life. As soon as fresh data stops coming my way, I'll wrap that one up but in the meantime, you'll have the first book before this Christmas. I'll tell you more about it over the next few weeks.

Stay up to date via Mark's blog.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus Volume 1 due in July

Next month sees the debut of a new Buffy series from Dark Horse Comics, which picks up where the TV series ended. This book, however, collects issues from Dark Horse's previous "Buffy" title.

Details:

The definitive comics collection of all things Buffy starts here. This first massive volume begins at the beginning-The Origin, a faithful adaptation of creator Joss Whedon’s original screenplay for the film that started it all. The newly chosen Slayer’s road to Sunnydale continues in Viva Las Buffy and Slayer, Interrupted. Next, Sunnydale, the Scoobies, and an English librarian lead the way into Season One continuity. Plus, The Goon creator Eric Powell provides pencils to "All’s Fair," featuring Spike and Drusilla at the 1933 World’s Fair.

The smash TV hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer led to nearly a decade of comics at Dark Horse-including multiple specials, one-shots, and guest miniseries. This omnibus series is the ultimate compilation of the Buffy comics Dark Horse has published, and runs along the TV series’ timeline. A fitting companion to Whedon’s comics-based relaunch of the show.

Includes:

Features: 15 Desktops, 7 Ecomics, 2 Games.

The book is available for pre-order now for $16.47 from Amazon.

Drag: Joss Whedon says he's now off the Wonder Woman film.

I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.

Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.

---------------------

Joe Hunter, pianist on a zillion Motown hits, has died.

Hunter's piano work was an integral part of such songs as Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and "Come and Get These Memories," and Marvin Gaye's "Pride and Joy." After Motown left Detroit in 1972, like many musicians, Hunter took what gigs he could find.
