Pop Culture Roundup Feb. 9, 2007

Cartoonist Johnny Hart of "B.C." and "Wizard of Id" fame has passed away.

Later in his career, some of Hart's cartoons had religious themes, a reflection of his own Christian faith. That sometimes led to controversy.

A strip published on Easter in 2001 drew protests from Jewish groups and led several newspapers to drop the strip. The cartoon depicted a menorah transforming into a cross, with accompanying text quoting some of Jesus Christ's dying words. Critics said it implied that Christianity supersedes Judaism.

These sets are available for pre-order now for $20.99 each from Amazon. Just click the title links below.

From the press release:

Due June 26 from Warner Home Video, Collectible New Giftsets Feature the Movie on which Airplane! is Based and Performances from Dana Andrews, Joan Collins, Jeanne Crain, Joan Crawford, Rory Calhoun, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Charlton Heston, Eleanor Parker and Lana Turner

Warner Home Video will bring "camp" home this summer with the June 26 introduction of Cult Camp Classics, Volumes 1 through 4. The studio which pioneered genre collections such as Forbidden Hollywood and Controversial Classics has gathered together 12 trashy treasures that will bring hours of kitschy fun in four volumes: Sci-Fi Thrillers (Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman, Queen of Outer Space, The Giant Behemoth); Women in Peril (The Big Cube, Caged, Trog); Terrorized Travelers (Hot Rods to Hell, Skyjacked, Zero Hour!) and Historical Epics (The Colossus of Rhodes, Land of Pharaohs, The Prodigal).

The Cult Camp Classics Collections boast the very latest remastered versions along with bonus content such as commentaries from actors, filmmakers and historians as well as original theatrical trailers. Colorfully packaged in super slim, eye-popping packaging, each volume contains three DVDs and will sell for $29.98 SRP and the single titles will be available for $14.97 SRP. Order due date for all is May 22.

Key gems in the collections include the original film on which the mega-hit comedy Airplane is based (Zero Hour!), Sergio Leone's directorial debut (The Colossus of Rhodes), a performance by 1956 Playboy Playmate Yvette Vickers (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman), Joan Collins' first film (The Land of the Pharaohs) and Joan Crawford's last (Trog).

Volume 1: Sci-Fi Thrillers

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)
It's impossible not to have fun with this all-time kitsch classic which, as fans know, is actually about a very big woman with a very bad attitude. The woman is wealthy Nancy Archer (Allison Hayes), fresh from the looney bin and ticked off. Her rat of a husband (William Hudson) has been at play while she's been gone, putting the moves on Honey Parker (Yvette Vickers, Playboy's Miss July 1959) and scheming about the day when Nancy's fortune will be theirs. That day will never come - not after Nancy has an alien encounter that zaps her metabolism into overdrive. Soon, Nancy's size matches her rage. She'll prove that big girls don't cry; they get even.

DVD Special Features:
* Commentary by Yvette Vickers and film historian Tom Weaver
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Queen of Outer Space (1958)
This milestone of movie camp tells the out-of-this-world story of a captain and his men who have landed on a planet where males are outlawed. The good new for them is some women there are eager to break the law! And if that wasn't enough, the man-hating Venusian queen (Laurie Mitchell) aims to destroy Earth once a Beta Disintegrator is operational. But a gossamer-gowned scientist (Zsa Zsa Gabor) and her curvy cohorts eye the men and they like what they see. This film has sets, costumes and effects from Flight to Mars, Forbidden Planet and World Without End.

DVD Special Features:
* Commentary by Laurie Mitchell and film historian Tom Weaver
* Theatrical Trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

The Giant Behemoth (1958)
As in his classic The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, director Eugene Lourie plunges viewers into a thrilling stomping ground, unleashing another Thunder Lizard to stomp on everything in sight. Alarming levels of radiation have infused the water, plants and skies, and a radiated paleosaurus rises from the ocean depths. In its path: London. The giant has the strength to topple buildings (King Kong's Willis O'Brien contributes rampaging stop-motion effects), a stride that flattens cars, a flesh-searing radioactive ray and a ticked-off attitude. Left in ruins on land, humankind takes the fight to the beast's undersea realm, where a two-man submarine crew must ensure the torpedo they fire is dead-on.

DVD Special Features
* Commentary by veteran special effects creators Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett (The Academy Award ® winning visual effects and dinosaur supervisors of "Jurassic Park" provide insight into this ground-breaking stop-motion monster.)
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (Feature Film Only)

Volume 2: Women in Peril

The Big Cube (1968)
The only person standing between a multi-million dollar inheritance for Lisa (Karin Mossberg and her druggie boyfriend Johnny (George Chakiris) is step-mom Adriana (Lana Turner), who refuses to approve the pair's marriage. So the young couple decides to "Cube" momma -- lace her prescription meds with psychedelics -- and drive Adriana out of her mind. It almost works until family friend Frederick Lansdale (Richard Egan) comes to her rescue. The Big Cube is a cinematic freak-out "for camp followers only" (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide).

DVD Special Features
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (Feature Film Only)

Caged (1950)
"Will she come out woman or wildcat?" trumpeted ads for this women's prison classic. There's no question about how the film itself came out. Using familiar but sharply played characters to bring home its reform-minded message, Caged remains a pivotal genre classic. Best Actress Academy AwardÒ nominee* Eleanor Parker portrays the inmate whose transformation from sunny innocent to tight-lipped 'con' provides its focus. As the tyrannical floor matron, Best Supporting Actress nominee Hope Emerson is 6'2" of Grade A malevolence. And an earnest prison superintendent, a sour lifer, a street-lamp tramp, a patsy, a society dame and other types add atmosphere to an OscarÒ-nominated script co-writer Virginia Kellogg researched while posing on the inside as a convict.

DVD Special Features:
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English, Français & Español (Feature Film Only)

Trog (1969)
People call him Trog, short for a prehistoric cave dweller called a Troglodyte. To an anthropologist (Joan Crawford in her final film), he's the scientific discovery of the age - a wild half man/half ape. To others, he's walking death. A grocer is impaled on a meat hook, a car is tossed aside like a twig, a child is kidnapped - all after local resident Sam Murdock (Michael Gough) prods the brute into a blind rampage. In true horror tradition, Murdock's behavior leaves no doubt who the real savages are.

DVD Special Features:
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Volume 3: Terrorized Travelers

Hot Rods to Hell (1966)
Sam Katzman produces this fast-driving drive-in special, whose 200+ credits include Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and Rock Around the Clock. Dana Andrews and Jeanne Crain play a straight-arrow couple whose family road trip to a new life in the West becomes a running game of "chicken" with pedal-to-the-metal teens. "These kids have nowhere to go, and they want to get there at a 150 miles an hour," says a cop about the kids looking for kicks in their souped-up Hot Rods to Hell. This is where the cult-movie rubber meets the road.

DVD Special Features:
* Theatrical Trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Skyjacked (1972)
Charlton Heston plays Hank O'Hara, a top pilot who knows how to handle an airliner with ease. But now he faces the unexpected: He's been Skyjacked. Heston leads a top cast in this thriller from the era of big, edge-of-your-seat disaster films like The Poseidon Adventure and Earthquake. John Guillermin (The Towering Inferno) directs, escalating the tension in a story about a deranged war vet (James Brolin) who demands that a Minneapolis-bound flight make a slight detour - to Moscow. All that stands between the terrified passengers and doom is the steely resolve of Captain O'Hara.

DVD Special Features:
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Zero Hour! (1957)
Fish or lamb chops? A wrong dinner selection gives food poisoning to the pilot and first officer of Flight 714 - and that could mean doom for everyone aboard in Zero Hour!, the high-flying film based on a story by Arthur Hailey (Airport, Hotel) and later spoofed in the comedy Airplane!. Dana Andrews portrays the passenger who must overcome the trauma of his wartime experiences to guide the plane. Sterling Hayden plays the flight-control jockey talking Andrews in through bumpy skies. And gridiron great Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch is the stricken pilot.

DVD Special Features:
* Theatrical Trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Volume 4: Historical Epics

The Colossus of Rhodes (1961)
Filmmakers often begin their directing careers with works of limited scale. Sergio Leone (Fistful of Dollars) began with a Colossus. Spectacle is king in The Colossus of Rhodes, Leone's first credited film as a director. Sun-bronzed heroes (including toga-wearing Rory Calhoun) battle tyranny. Prisoners scramble for their lives in coliseum pageants of doom. Usurpers connive. Revolution erupts. And towering over all the excitement is the mighty bronze Colossus that straddles the harbor, fighting foes by dropping burning oil from the huge cauldron it holds and firing streams of molten lead from the catapults in its headpiece.

DVD Special Features:
* Commentary by film historian Christopher Frayling
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Land of the Pharaohs (1955)
Director Howard Hawks, who worked brilliantly in practically every movie genre, shows his mastery of the large-scale epic with this gigantic production filmed on location in Egypt. Thousands of extras (9,787 in one scene alone!), magnificently detailed sets (including the pyramid's inner labyrinth, booby-trapped so no one can learn its secrets and live) and vast desert vistas fill the screen and astonish the eye.

There are also human-scale stories -- the Pharaoh (Jack Hawkins) who orders the pyramid as his tomb, dooming untold numbers to unending toil; the architect (James Robertson Justice) designing it to earn his people's freedom; the slaves constructing it of blood, sweat and tears. And lastly, the beautiful queen (Joan Collins) whose greed leads to murder - and a stunning revenge.

DVD Special Features:
* Commentary by filmmaker/historian Peter Bogdanovich, with interview excerpts of director Howard Hawks
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

The Prodigal (1955)
Pagan sect high priestess Lana Turner beguiles a humble Hebrew farmer (Edmund Purdom) away from his faith in this drama based on the Biblical parable of The Prodigal Son. Four sprawling soundstages were filled with opulent sets representing the Holy Land circa 70 BC, and director Richard Thorpe (Ivanhoe, Jailhouse Rock) employed thousands of extras to create an environment rife with all the famine, poverty and unrest the panoramic CinemaScope screen could hold. But the star of the visually spectacular show remains Turner, shimmering in bejeweled gowns that reveal just why she can drive a true believer to the brink of forsaking all he holds dear.

DVD Special Features:
* Commentary by film historian Dr. Drew Casper
* Theatrical trailer
* Subtitles: English & Français (feature film only)

Australia's Courier-Mail examines the long, long, long history of comics hero The Phantom.

Pre-dating both the Batman and Superman comic book heroes, The Phantom was the brainchild of Missouri-born writer Lee Falk in 1936, who had already, as a young man conceived of his other great comic character, Mandrake the Magician, two years earlier before coming up with the brilliantly simple idea of having a multi-skilled, physically impressive and well-educated crime fighter living in the mysterious deep woods of a jungle from where he could freely come and go while pursuing justice.

Lost clues: "Left Behind" ep. 15, season 3

Synopsis:

As Hurley tries to turn Sawyer into a nicer human, Kate and Juliet find they've been abandoned by the Others, who apparently have abandoned their village as well, putting on backpacks and heading for who know where.

Before this, however, Locke tells Kate he's going with the Others. He says he made a case for Kate coming along but was informed about her past history (presumably her having killed her stepfather). The Others, Locke says, "aren't very forgiving."

Kate and Juliet soon learn Sayid and Jack also have been left behind and meet up with them. Although Kate and Sayid are suspicious, Jack is adamant that Juliet be able to join them on their trek back to the beach and their fellow crash survivors.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* Where the heck did the Others go? Their submarine was destroyed and the electromagnetic disturbance caused by the Hatch explosion has supposedly made the island unfindable from the outside world so, presumably, they're stuck on the main island or their smaller, nearby island (if they go by boat, not sub).

* Has Locke really transformed into an Other or is he faking?

* What happened with Locke and his father, who apparently was captured by the Others and was being held in their village?

* Did Locke in someway make up for past faults by confronting his father? And is that why he's now viewed as hunky-dory by the Others and good enough to go on their backpacking trip?

* Is the whole scenario of the show--the crash, the island, the connections between people--all some self-improvement thing? Redemption and addressing past wrongs seems to crop up all the time. If Locke somehow put his conflict with his father to rest and is now viewed as ok by the Others, there may be something to the theory.

* Cassidy Phillips, the woman who helps Kate make contact with her mother, was swindled out of her life savings by Sawyer in the episode "The Long Con." Sawyer is also the father of her child.

* Has Juliet really been left behind or is she just foolin'? What about Jack: Is he trustworthy at this point or not?

* Juliet says she doesn't know what the smoke monster is, but the force field thingy around the Others' village can apparently keep it out.

* Again, Juliet reveals she knows tons of information about Jack. Where do the Others get such info and what do they hope to do with it?

* Where'd Juliet learn all those kung-fu moves? Do Others recruits receive martial arts training and, if so, why? What are they training to defend themselves against?

A film based on DC Comics' "Metal Men" series is in the works.

Warner Bros. Pictures is hoping to strike gold with the robotic superhero team "Metal Men," setting up the project with producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Eric Champnella has been brought on board to write.

...Geoff Johns, who was an assistant to Richard Donner before becoming one of the comic world's renowned writers, helped develop the take and will executive produce.

"Lost" producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and actor Terry O'Quinn discuss the character of Locke with the Buffalo News.

As the creators dreamed up Locke, Lindelof couldn’t help but think of the Charles Atlas comic book ads he used to see when he was a child: the scrawny kid on the beach who gets sand kicked in his face by a bully, then starts weightlifting and whacks the bully in the face when he returns.

“I think that’s basically who John Locke is,” Lindelof said. “We keep showing you stories about him making bad decisions and being abused and conned and suckered, all because he wants to be loved. Now, he’s on the island, he’s not preoccupied with needing to be loved anymore.”

New batch of Walt Disney Treasures DVDs announced

The latest limited-edition double disks in this series will be out Dec. 11 this year.

Details from Disney:

Walt Disney Home Entertainment continues the popular Walt Disney Treasures series with three new 2-Disc DVD sets featuring rarely seen footage presented with amazing color and sound. The seventh installment of Walt Disney Treasures will be available December 11, 2007 in a limited supply just in time for the holidays.

Predating even Mickey Mouse, the legendary and rarely-seen "Oswald The Lucky Rabbit" was Walt Disney's first big animated star, and having recently returned to the Disney fold, comes out of the vault for the first time ever on DVD. The silent shorts made from 1926 to 1927 with Walt's personal touch, are revitalized with a brand-new score specifically made for Walt Disney Treasures, Wave VII.

"Chronological Donald, Volume 3" features the most prolific of "Walt's Fab Five," the short-tempered but hilarious Donald Duck in rarely seen solo shorts dating 1947 through 1950.

"Disneyland: Secrets, Stories and Magic" is a comprehensive look at the "Happiest Place on Earth." The centerpiece of this volume is a new documentary with archival footage, including Walt's own words, as well as new interviews that reveal the magic and manpower behind one of the world's most famous destinations.

Each volume features noted film historian, author, and critic Leonard Maltin. Each volume is individually numbered, with an authenticity certificate, and an exclusive lithograph in the collectible, unique packaging tins and available just in time for the holidays, in a limited supply only.

Filmation Superman and Batman DVD sets cover art, pre-order info

Warner Bros. will release Filmation's 1960s "New Adventures of Superman" and 1970s "New Adventures of Batman" animated series on June 26.

Release details
In 1966, Superman, Lois Lane and Perry White were animated into 36 action packed 6-minute episodes that were the forerunner shows leading into subsequent animated hero programming on CBS. In 1977, CBS aired an animation series featuring the voices of Adam West and Burt Ward as DC Comics' Super Heroes, Batman and Robin. Now, Warner Home Video will bring the animation back to life when they release "The New Adventures of Superman" and "The New Adventures of Batman" as two separate 2-Disc Collector sets on June 26, 2007.

Click the links to order either set.

"The New Adventures of Superman"
The 6-minute vignettes that comprise The New Adventures of Superman depict Superman and Lois Lane in animated form for the first time since they were immortalized in the iconic Superman live-action short films of the 1940s. The series also marked the animation debut of Jimmy Olsen and classic Superman villains like Lex Luthor and Brainiac. The 2-Disc Collector set features 36 action-packed episodes with the legendary super heroes and great bonus features.

Extras include:
  • Superman in 66 - In 1966 the comics industry was booming. This was also a hallmark year for Superman and an amazing year for the country. It was also the year The New Adventures of Superman debuted on CBS. This piece will explore how the 60's era influenced the character of Superman and led to his Filmation debut on this groundbreaking show.

Pre-order New Adventures of Superman for $20.19 at Amazon.

"The New Adventures of Batman"
This show featured the voices of Adam West and Burt Ward, who starred in the live-action show Batman. Voicing the animated versions of Batman and Robin was the first time the two had reprised their famous roles since the live-action show was cancelled in 1968. In The New Adventures of Batman, Batman, Robin and Batgirl battle various villains in Gotham City and gain fandom for their heroic actions. One fan of the Dynamic Duo is Batmite, a dimensional imp who insists on helping Batman & Robin, regardless of their wishes. The 2-Disc Collector set features 16 action-packed episodes with the dynamic-duo and great bonus features.

Extras include:
  • Dark Versus Light - Filmation and the Batman - 1977 marked Batman's return to television in Filmation's New Adventures of Batman. With interviews ranging from the President & Publisher of DC Comics to the President of Warner Bros. Animation, the legacy of Filmation, will be examined from animation style to how this core DC character was depicted in the series. Among the themes explored will be the unique split between the lighter, comedic version of Batman made popular by Filmation and the darker, brooding character seen in Detective Comics at the time.
  • Bat-Commentary - An audio commentary from Filmation historian Michael Swanigan and Filmation founder Lou Schiemer on two of the episodes from the series. The special feature will be denoted with a selectable button indicating the respective episode from which the commentary is derived.

TIP! was off last week and missed the news about the unfortunate passing of Marshall Rogers, one of the all-time best Batman artists. Fred Hembeck has a nice tribute and there's an obituary here. Rogers also did wonderful work on Doctor Strange and the Silver Surfer. He'll be greatly missed.

Lost clues: "Exposé" Ep. 14, Season 3

Synopsis:

In the present, both Nikki and Paulo keel over. Doing some detective work, Hurley, Sawyer and Charlie determine the couple has evidently killed one another over a diamond heist gone wrong.

In flashbacks, we see how Nikki, an actress, and Paulo, a chef, poison an elderly TV producer and steal his diamonds. They're on their way from Australia to Los Angeles with the loot when their plane crashes.

On the island, Paolo finds the luggage containing the diamonds, but doesn't tell Nikki. He fears she's just after the money and will dump him if she has it. Without the diamonds, he has a chance at a future with her.

Nikki, however, learns the truth, and flings a poison spider at Paulo. The critter, Nikki learned from the later Dr. Artz, has a bite that paralyzes its victims. In humans, the bite paralyzes for up to eight hours and a victim's heartbeat become virtually undetectable. Something Nikki forgot thought is that, once released, the female spider attracts equally poisonous males from miles around. So, moments after Paulo gets bitten she does, too.

The couple meets an ironic end, buried alive but seemingly dead by their fellow crash survivors.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* We see that Nikki and Paulo discovered the Pearl station before anyone else did, but kept the information to themselves.

* Hiding the diamonds in the bathroom of the Pearl station, Paulo overhears Ben and Juliet spying on Jack. Ben reveals how he intends to convince Jack to operate on him. This sets into motion to whole process of luring Michael to go in search of Walt and the eventual captivity of Sawyer, Kate and Jack.

* Soon after the crash, we see Ethan Rom come up to Nikki and Paulo pretending to be a fellow passenger offering them help.

* Paulo stole a walkie talkie from the Pearl and Sawyer and the rest discovered it. Will this help them eavesdrop on the Others?

* In "The Man from Tallahassee" Locke is seen watching "Exposé," the show Nikki guested on.

* Sun learns it was Charlie, not one the Others, who attempted to abduct her. The whole thing was rigged as a diversion for Sawyer to steal the guns from the Hatch.
