Pop Culture Roundup July 16, 2007

The BBC reveals some details on the upcoming second season of "Doctor Who" spinoff "Torchwood":

Torchwood, the smash-hit thriller drama created by Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies, is currently filming for a new series which will be shown on BBC Two early next year.

Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles), Owen (Burn Gorman), Tosh (Naoko Mori) and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) return as the close-knit team of investigators solving alien and human crimes as they delve into the underworld of modern day Cardiff.

The high-octane storylines, filmed in and around Cardiff, include Torchwood's encounter with a rogue Time Agent; a tragic time-slip from World War One; and a memory-thief who uncovers long-forgotten secrets among the entire team.

Making a special guest appearance in the first episode is James Marsters who starred as Spike, the punk-goth vampire, in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Commenting on his role in Torchwood, James says: "I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood so it was me who knocked on their door.

"I am really excited about the character I am playing. I can't say too much about him, except he is naughty and a bit of a psychopath."

Later on in the run Alan Dale makes a star appearance. Alan is currently appearing in Ugly Betty as Bradford Meade and he is well known for his roles in The O.C., Lost, The West Wing and as Jim Robinson in the Australian hit soap Neighbours.

He said: "I am thrilled to be working on Torchwood and delighted to be in England again. I am a huge fan of British television drama."

Another familiar face among the surprise guest stars is Doctor Who's gorgeous companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) who brings her time-travelling expertise and medical skills to the team halfway through the series.

She says: "I'm really looking forward to working with the Torchwood team and can't wait to start filming.

"It's a huge new challenge and a wonderful opportunity to develop and expand the character of Martha Jones."

Russell T Davies said: "Filming is well underway in Cardiff, and we're aiming to make the show bigger and bolder than ever, as we move to our new home on BBC Two.

"It's too early to start giving things away, but we've got some amazing guest stars, fearsome new aliens, and compelling new storylines that will push the Torchwood team further than ever before."

The 13-part series is written by Chris Chibnall, Catherine Tregenna, Helen Raynor, James Moran, Joseph Lidster, Peter J Hammond, JC Wilsher and Matt Jones.

"Farscape" is returning in a 10-episode Web series.

Farscape is one of three new broadband-only series being development for SCIFI.com, which boasts itself as the world's largest sci-fi entertainment Web site (gaining more than 3 million unique visitors each month). There is no word yet on which actors or characters will be involved in the project, or just when it will arrive on the net. After being abruptly cancelled after four seasons, the critically-acclaimed Farscape returned in 2004 for the 4-hour miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.

Dave Howe, Sci-Fi Channel executive vice president, stated in an interview today that "We don’t know [which members of the cast will be returning]. Literally, we closed the deal yeaterday, so we haven’t gotten into any of the creative conversations about casting, or story; all of that is yet to come...[The new series] is based on Farscape so it will involve the characters from the series, but we don’t know who or what."

I gotta agree: The cover for the new Showcase Presents Batgirl collection is wrongheaded and lame. I'm glad that the book's contents are back in print though. See last week's Batgirl Celebration.

In the best tradition of horror comics comes Trick ’r Treat, a 4-issue, weekly shipping miniseries based on the major motion picture written and directed by Michael Dougherty (co-writer of Superman Returns and X-Men 2), produced by Bryan Singer, and starring Dylan Baker, Brian Cox, and Anna Paquin.
Each issue presents a vignette and weaves together four tales of terror and laughter as we witness a sleepy suburban neighborhood’s transformation into a Halloween horror! Small towns have never been so full of creepy characters — from a serial killer who specializes in poisoning candy and a group of mischievous kids who unearth their town's dark secret, to a young woman hunted by a masked stalker at the local festival, or a cantankerous old hermit dealing with a demonic trick-or-treater…these stories will grab hold and pull you in — whether you like it or not! The first issue ships during the opening week of this major motion picture from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures!

THE VINYL UNDERGROUND #1
Written by Si Spencer
Art by Simon Gane & Cameron Stewart
Cover by Sean Phillips
Noted British television writer Si Spencer (Eastenders, Torchwood, Bad Girls) presents a sharp, unforgettable cadence in THE VINYL UNDERGROUND, a 21st century cross between THE INVISIBLES and CSI that brings rich social and political context to the dark, glittering cesspool that is London. Spencer is joined by indie creator/penciller Simon Gane (Paris, Punk Strips) and Eisner-nominated artist Cameron Stewart (the Other Side, SeaGuy) with bold, captivating covers by by Sean Phillips (The Invisibles, Criminal).
In this fast-paced, ultra-cool ongoing crime-noir series, an unlikely quartet of occult detectives secretly solve crimes — from DJ crack bars in Camden to the elegant, high-society ballrooms that make up modern London. The Vinyl Underground is led by Morrison Shepherd, a D-list celebrity darling, soul DJ, and son of an ex-footballer. Fresh out of prison and off a nasty coke habit, Morrison is joined by a fellow ex-con named Perv, whose seizures give him clues to crimes long before the cops, and Leah, a gorgeous morgue assistant who leads a double life online and represents the brawn of the team.
Morrison's ex-flame Abi is reluctantly forced to join the team when her father is implicated for murder. A young boy's head (with diamonds in the eye sockets) washes up on the edge of the Thames and seems to be connected to a series of ritual killings, a drug called Khat, and Muti magic. Can they get to the bottom of it?

Pop Culture Roundup July 13, 2007

Here's the latest on the UK's Tintin hubbub:

The adventures of Tintin in the Congo will be moved from the children's shelves in Borders bookstores across the country and placed in the adult graphic novels section after the book was criticised for having allegedly racist content.

The Commission for Racial Equality said yesterday it was unacceptable for any shop to stock or sell the 1930s cartoon adventure of the Belgian boy journalist because of its crude racial stereotypes.

--------------------

BBC Radio, which--before the books, TV show and movie--first introduced the world to "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy," is putting another Douglas Adams creation on the air.

Douglas Adams's much loved detective, the enigmatic Dirk Gently, will be make his UK broadcast debut on BBC Radio 4 this October.

Featuring a star-studded cast with Harry Enfield in the lead role, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency will be produced by the same award-winning team that made the conclusion to The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Harry is joined by Lord of the Rings actor Billy Boyd, Fawlty Towers' Andrew Sachs, The Golden Compass' Jim Carter and Peepshow's Olivia Colman.

Dirk Gently has an unshakeable belief in the interconnectedness of all things but his Holistic Detective Agency's only success seems to be tracking down missing cats for old ladies. Then Dirk stumbles upon an old friend behaving bizarrely, and he is drawn into a 4 billion-year-old mystery that must be solved if the human race is to avoid immediate extinction.

This first series of six 30-minute episodes is adapted from the book of the same name and directed by Dirk Maggs, himself chosen by Douglas Adams to conclude the Hitchhikers saga.

Considered by many Adams fans to be as funny as, if darker than, Hitchhikers, the Dirk Gently novels reflect Douglas's unique and funny take on matters as wide-ranging as consciousness, conservation, man's place in the cosmos and crime. The first series features everything from quantum physics to missing cats, via Coleridge, Bach and an Electric Monk.

The series begins in October and will also have its own dedicated webpages on bbc.co.uk/radio4/dirkgently featuring trailers, photographs, production diaries, video and competitions. Programmes will also be available on Radio 4's listen again service.

Hopefully, the show will be available via the Beeb's streaming radio site.
